THE ERMAN BROTHERS
Detroit Bred | Tucson Grown
From sibling rivals to business partners, the Erman brothers’ path into hospitality and the art and science of placemaking has been unscripted.
Mark majored in geology at the University of Michigan, then worked as a geologist at Bureau Veritas, a global environmental consulting firm. He returned to school at Wayne State University Law School, graduating cum laude in 2007, and practiced environmental law in Detroit and Boston at Troutman Pepper, a national firm. During this time, while homebrewing beer, the brothers began to contemplate a venture together. After visiting Tucson with its mountains, stars and community, Mark relocated with his family in 2011. He serves as general counsel and creative director for the enterprise, charting direction, drafting plans, securing financing and permits, and handling construction oversight. He enjoys outdoor exploration, sharing epic lookouts with friends, rocks, painting, writing, and time for reflection.
Eric majored in psychology at the University of Michigan, following his passion for beer into the commercial brewing industry. He honed his craft as a brewer in Detroit, Denver, Boulder, and Portland before moving to Tucson to launch Ermanos. With his mechanical and technical foundation, Eric continues to be driven as a life-long learner in pursuit of new skills and wisdom, and serves as strategic advisor and director of operations and community relations, among other roles. He enjoys chess, photography, music, cinema, and nature.
The Erman brothers are currently developing ALIGN, drawing from their previous establishments as successful ventures proving the benefits of enhanced gathering environments for our individual and collective well being. Drawing from their direct lived experience, with ALIGN, the Ermans are motivated to create a spirited place for connection—an inspiring refuge for pleasure and flow to soothe our overworked minds, restore our stressed bodies, and relieve pain amidst the challenges of modernity. The ALIGN project team has locked in an ultra premium site that measures up to its own aspirations and is also capable of delivering on its promise of creating a significant accessible healing environment which humans have communally built for each other for millennia, particularly in the pre-industrial past.
The brothers lead a collaborative organization founded on relationships and equity. They love the Sonoran Desert community and are exuberant and honored to be part of the undertaking ahead.
Ermanos Bar (2015) was the beginning of the brothers’ journey into architecture in hospitality. The space received two AIA awards for interior architecture.
